Birth and Parenting Choices - 5 Reasons why Informed Is Best

The journey to parenthood can be a transformative experience, filled with excitement and anticipation, as well as some anxiety and uncertainty. As a birth worker, I see a significant gap in the messages that expecting and new moms receive about birth and parenting choices.

Acknowledging that pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood can differ significantly for each person and family is crucial. As birthing people, our choices are often influenced by personal life experiences, traumas, privilege, and the strength of our support system. It is irresponsible to assume that one approach is best for everyone. And it’s essential to recognize and honor these differences if we want to improve birth outcomes and postpartum outcomes for new moms.

As a postpartum mindset coach, I strive to strike a balance between natural parenting concepts and the demands of the modern world. I believe that while it's essential to honor the innate wisdom and instincts that guide us as parents, we must also acknowledge the realities of the world we live in. By finding a balance between natural concepts and modern-day demands, we can create a sustainable and empowering parenting experience that is authentic to each individual's unique situation. By providing access to accurate, evidence-based information and supportive resources, women can make informed decisions that align with their personal values and preferences and I am committed to helping women navigate this complex landscape, and empowering them to create a perinatal experience that feels authentic and true to their individual needs and desires.

Empowered decision-making means that pregnant people are supported in their choices and have the resources they need to make those choices. This can include having a supportive care provider who listens to their concerns and preferences, access to childbirth education classes, and a strong support network of family and friends. It also means having the confidence to advocate for their own needs and preferences and feeling comfortable making decisions that are right for them and their baby, regardless of what others may think.

As a postpartum mindset coach, I'm passionate about helping expecting and new moms have an informed and empowered perinatal experience. By providing evidence-based information and personalized support, I can help you make choices that align with your unique needs and values.

In this list, I've outlined 5 reasons why having an informed and empowered perinatal experience is essential. Here they are:

  1. It allows you to make choices that are right for you: When you have access to accurate information, you are empowered to make decisions that are based on what is right for you as an individual. This means you can make choices that align with your values, preferences, and circumstances, whether that is choosing a home birth, a hospital birth, a vaginal birth, or a cesarean birth.

  2. It increases your confidence and reduces anxiety: When you are informed about what to expect during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, you are better equipped to handle any challenges that may arise. This knowledge can increase your confidence and reduce anxiety, which can have a positive impact on your overall well-being.

  3. It can improve your birth experience: Feeling informed and empowered can help you to have a more positive birth experience, regardless of how you give birth. When you feel supported and respected in your choices, it can help to reduce pain, increase feelings of control and satisfaction, and improve outcomes for both you and your baby. Your birth experience can have a direct impact on your postpartum.

  4. It promotes better health outcomes: When you are informed about the risks and benefits of different options for prenatal care, childbirth, and postpartum care, you are more likely to make choices that promote better health outcomes for you and your baby. This can include reducing the risk of complications during pregnancy and birth, and supporting breastfeeding and healthy infant development.

  5. It helps to build a strong support network: When you are empowered to make informed decisions, you are more likely to seek out and build a strong support network of healthcare providers, family, and friends who can support you during this journey. This network can help you to feel more confident, prepared, and supported throughout your perinatal experience.
